On Tuesday, 26 August, at around 2:10 p.m., a report was received about a grass fire which, according to witnesses, had started because of a discarded cigarette butt. While still on their way, the police officers spotted clouds of smoke rising above the motorway.
There were no fire service units at the scene yet, so the police officers immediately took action to stop the spreading fire. Using materials lying nearby, including jackets and blankets, they began smothering the flames and then used a car fire extinguisher to limit the fire as much as possible and secure the area.
After a short while, a fire service unit arrived at the scene and took over the remaining operations. Thanks to their joint efforts, the fire was quickly brought under control.
The patrol’s decisive response prevented the fire from causing serious consequences.
We appeal for responsibility and common sense. Throwing a cigarette butt onto dry grass can cause a dangerous fire and pose a threat not only to the environment, but also to the lives of animals and people.
