The incident took place on 11 August this year. – In the evening, a man ran up to officers from the Bolesławiec County Police Headquarters, informing them that he was chasing a pedestrian who had just been driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The police officers immediately set off in pursuit of the intoxicated driver – reports Senior Warrant Officer Aleksandra Pieprzycka from the Press Section of the Lower Silesian Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław.
As established, the 27-year-old resident of Silesian Voivodeship, driving from the Solidarności roundabout in Kruszyn toward Bolesławiec, noticed a Hyundai Tucson being driven dangerously and erratically. The spokesperson: – Suspecting that the driver might be intoxicated, he decided to prevent him from driving any farther. At the intersection with Modłowa Street, he blocked his path, then took the vehicle’s keys and called the emergency number.
The Hyundai driver then abandoned the car and fled on foot in the direction of... the Police headquarters.
The witness set off after him on foot. Senior Warrant Officer A. Pieprzycka:
As the two men passed the police unit building, the intervening man noticed police officers standing in front of the headquarters, ran up to them, and immediately informed them of the situation. Four officers, who had not yet begun their night shift, immediately started a pursuit along Modłowa Street.
The police quickly found the fugitive – the man had tried to hide in a ditch, several dozen metres beyond the entrance to the headquarters grounds. They detained him and brought him to the Bolesławiec County Police Headquarters building, while his car was towed to a police parking lot. A sobriety test showed more than 2.5 per mille of alcohol in his system. It was also established that he did not hold a driving licence.
The 52-year-old resident of Bolesławiec County was brought before the justice system under an expedited procedure. Bolesławiec officers brought the man before the local District Court, where he was sentenced for offences and misdemeanours. The driver was found guilty of driving while intoxicated and was subsequently sentenced.
The police summarise:
The witness’s reaction and civic-minded attitude probably prevented a tragedy on the road. Anyone who witnesses a situation in which another person may be driving under the influence of alcohol should immediately notify the police by calling the emergency number 112.
