The incident occurred on June 11, at around 9:30 p.m. – A powerful bang rang out on Chojnowska Street in Legnica. The driver of a BMW, who was under the significant influence of alcohol, lost control of the car and hit a wall belonging to a school – reports Commissioner Jagoda Ekiert, press officer of the Legnica KMP. – Fortunately, no one was injured.
The traffic police who arrived at the scene found a man attempting to secure the vehicle. The spokeswoman said: – He claimed that he had not been driving the car and had only been helping remove it.
A strong smell of alcohol was detectable on him. Officers therefore conducted a breathalyzer test, which unequivocally confirmed that he was intoxicated. The breathalyzer showed more than 2 per mille of alcohol in his exhaled air.
Commissioner Jagoda Ekiert:
As if that were not enough, a check of the data in the system showed that the man’s driving licence had been seized and his authorization to drive vehicles had been revoked.
She added: – This incident is yet another demonstration of how dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol is. Reduced concentration, incorrect assessment of the situation and delayed reaction time can lead to tragedy in a fraction of a second. The crime carries a penalty of up to 3 years in prison.
Police once again urge people never to drive under the influence of alcohol:
Every per mille of alcohol in the blood reduces concentration, slows reactions and alters perception of the surroundings. The consequences can be dramatic both for the driver and for uninvolved bystanders.
