A police chase involving the driver of a Dodge took place in the city during the long May weekend. – While patrolling the streets, district officers decided to stop the driver for a roadside check. However, when he saw the police car and the officer signaling him to stop, the driver began to flee – reports asp. szt. Monika Kaleta of the Voivodeship Police Headquarters in Wrocław.
The officers gave chase. The spokesperson said: – The man did not respond to the police car’s lights and siren. He sped along the city’s main streets. In the vicinity of one of them, he lost control of the vehicle and went into an uncontrolled skid. The driver hit a roadside streetlight, knocking it over, and then struck a bench and a rubbish bin. This did not stop the road pirate.
The speeding car rammed another streetlight, but finally came to a stop against it. The policewoman said:
This did not stop the driver, who was determined not to submit to the check and continued fleeing on foot. One uniformed police officer pursued him, but failed to catch the desperate man.
Meanwhile, inside the vehicle, police found a disoriented 26-year-old passenger. The duty officer immediately sent a forensic technician, an investigative team, a handler with a service dog and officers from other divisions to the scene. Their aim was to quickly secure the area and arrest the driver.
The officers said:
The operation was dynamic and was conducted in various parts of the city and throughout Lubań Municipality. During this time, police officers, the fire service and road services secured the scene. The 26-year-old passenger who had been detained was taken to a police station, where he was released after questioning.
The search for the driver covered not only urban areas but also extensive woodland, where, according to the findings, the suspect might have been staying.
The 28-year-old man hid from law enforcement for several days, but was eventually arrested by criminal investigators. The police department summed up the case:
The suspect was charged, among other things, with failing to stop for a roadside check. The resident of Lubań had had his driving privileges revoked. As if that were not enough, he also had an active driving ban and should not have been behind the wheel at all. He committed these crimes under recidivism, for which he faces more than seven years in prison. He will now face court for his actions.
