The incident occurred on April 10 in a forest in Piechowice. – At around 7:10 a.m., the duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra received a report about the discovery of an object resembling a mortar shell – reports Senior Inspector Edyta Bagrowska, press officer for the Jelenia Góra Municipal Police Headquarters. – A police patrol was immediately dispatched to the scene and confirmed that the find dated from World War II.
She adds: – To prevent any potential danger, the officers secured the area and kept bystanders away from the scene.
The shell was dealt with by bomb-disposal specialists from Bolesławiec.
Police appeal!
- Do not touch, move or attempt to disarm such an object! Even after several decades, it may still be active and could explode at the slightest movement.
- Do not dig up or uncover suspicious objects! Out of curiosity, many people try to expose a find—this is extremely dangerous and can lead to explosions with tragic consequences.
- Notify the services immediately! If you find an object resembling a shell, mine, grenade or other military item, contact the Police as soon as possible by calling 112. Until the services arrive, secure the area so that no one approaches the find.
- Warn others! If you are walking in the forest, working at a construction site or farming a field and come across a suspicious object, inform nearby people and do not let anyone touch it.
- Every unexploded ordnance item poses a real threat to health and life—only a swift response and reporting it to the appropriate services can prevent tragedy.
