The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. – The duty officer at the Głogów police headquarters received a report that a man on Jana z Głogowa Square had an explosive device in his backpack and intended to detonate it – reports Senior Officer Aleksandra Pieprzycka of the Wrocław Provincial Police Headquarters.
Police were immediately sent to the scene. The spokeswoman said: – The man was standing in front of the main entrance to the Complex of Polytechnic Schools in Głogów. Wires connected to a laptop were protruding from his backpack. To ensure residents’ safety, the scene was secured by police officers and the Fire Service.
The police talked to the man and attempted to restrain him. He then tried to reach for a knife he was carrying. Senior Officer A. Pieprzycka:
However, thanks to the effective and immediate actions of the police officers, the man was restrained and detained.
A police officer with a service dog trained to detect the odours of explosive materials and a bomb-disposal reconnaissance team were also sent to the scene. The police found no explosive materials in the backpack.
It turned out that the detained 47-year-old was drunk. Moreover, tests detected psychotropic substances in his system.
The suspect was taken into police custody. He could face up to eight years in prison.
