The incident occurred on January 2, 2025, at approximately 12:50 p.m. Police responded to a report that a passenger vehicle driver had crashed into a tree on Dolnośląska Street in Jelenia Góra.
According to the officers’ findings, the 50-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Passat most likely failed to adjust his speed to the road conditions, lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. The officers said:
Drivers traveling behind the vehicle wanted to help the man, but he explained that he was ill and slightly indisposed, but did not need help and felt fine. Then he left the scene.
Concerned, the officers gathered as much information as possible about the man’s appearance and began searching for him. The police said: – About one kilometer from where the vehicle had been left, they spotted a man whose appearance matched that of the person being sought. Fortunately, it turned out that the 50-year-old had not suffered serious injuries. During the officers’ actions, they detected the smell of alcohol on the driver. The test showed more than 2 per mille of alcohol. In addition, the vehicle the man had been driving did not have a valid technical inspection.
The “ailing” 50-year-old now faces up to three years in prison. The officers said:
Let us remember that getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or a similarly acting substance poses a serious threat not only to ourselves, but also to other road users. Our safety, as well as the safety of others, depends on us and our sense of responsibility.
