At the end of November, we reported:

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Złotoryja was investigating the circumstances surrounding a 13-year-old resident of the Okręgowy Ośrodek Wychowawczy in Jerzmanice-Zdrój attempting to take his own life on Thursday (November 21, 2024). During the proceedings, it was established that the minor’s decision was allegedly caused by one of the educators abusing him that day. The circumstances were confirmed by surveillance recordings. The man was detained on November 25, 2024.

The whole of Poland was talking about this case. The 13-year-old, in critical condition, was taken to the intensive care unit at the Wojewódzki Szpital Specjalistyczny in Legnica. What is more, after a brain scan, it seemed that the changes would already be irreversible.

The boy was kept in an induced coma and was extubated after 30 days. He is slowly beginning to make contact; for example, he can open his eyes or hold out his hand when instructed.

As hospital staff emphasize, the fact that 13-year-old Mateusz is alive is extraordinary. Paradoxically, much of the credit goes to the educators from the facility near Złotoryja, who began resuscitation. Although the teenager still requires round-the-clock care, medics in Legnica are full of optimism.

The boy is a half-orphan: his mother died when he was very young, while his father is serving time in prison and is not interested in his son’s fate
