On the orders of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra, a 23-year-old German citizen suspected of leading, in Germany, a militant right-wing extremist group aimed at committing terrorist crimes was arrested in Zgorzelec on 5 November. – The wanted man was sought on the basis of a European Arrest Warrant issued by a judge of the Federal Court in Karlsruhe – explains prosecutor Ewa Węglarowicz-Makowska, press spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra. – A search of the suspect’s premises uncovered, among other things, firearms, ammunition, bulletproof vests and emblems bearing fascist slogans.

After being brought to the prosecutor’s office, the 23-year-old was informed that he was wanted under a European Arrest Warrant and of the charges brought against him by the German authorities.

Questioned as a suspect, the German man denied committing the alleged acts and also refused to give an explanation.

The prosecutor applied to the District Court in Jelenia Góra for the 23-year-old to be remanded in temporary custody for 60 days from the time of his arrest and for the European Arrest Warrant against him to be executed, meaning that he would be surrendered to the Prosecutor General at the Federal Court in Karlsruhe.

The court remanded the suspect in temporary custody; however, the application for execution of the EAW will be heard at a later date.

In Germany, the 23-year-old faces up to 15 years in prison for the alleged crimes. In Poland, the same offences would carry a sentence of up to 20 years’ imprisonment.

The arrest was the result of joint efforts by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra and the Zielona Góra Branch of the Internal Security Agency. Officers from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office also took part in the operation.
