The arrest took place on Tuesday, August 6, after 6:00 p.m., in Gryfów Śląski. – Officers noticed two men who were sitting in the Gryfów market square and then got on their bicycles and rode away. Officers from the Lwówek road traffic unit decided to check their sobriety – explains Junior Aspirant Olga Łukaszewicz, press officer of the District Police Headquarters in Lwówek Śląski.
The officers' intuition did not let them down. The spokesperson said: – The 33-year-old blew 2 per mille of alcohol, while his 36-year-old companion had 0.26 per mille.
That was not all, however. It turned out that the 36-year-old was wanted; he had a prison sentence to serve. Junior Aspirant O. Łukaszewicz:
The man went straight from his bicycle ride to a police cell.
Officers remind the public:
(...) irresponsible cyclists who travel on public roads, in traffic zones or residential zones while under the influence of alcohol or intoxicated may be fined by officers; the fine now amounts to – PLN 1,000 when the test result is up to 0.5 per mille of alcohol in the body, and PLN 2,500 above 0.5 per mille.
However, perpetrators of these serious traffic offenses must bear in mind that officers may refer the case to court, in which case the financial penalty may be much higher. The court may additionally impose a ban on operating this means of transport for many months.
