The incident occurred on June 5, at approximately 4:27 p.m., on Koskowicka Street in Legnica. – The driver of a Dacia, traveling along Koskowicka Street at a marked bicycle crossing, failed to yield the right of way to the cyclist and hit him – reports Commissioner Jagoda Ekiert, press officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica.
She adds: – As a result of the impact, the 80-year-old man ended up in the opposite lane, in which a heavy goods vehicle was traveling. To avoid running over the man lying on the road, the driver of the Star veered onto the shoulder, where he hit a streetlamp and a road sign.
The cyclist, who had suffered bodily injuries, was taken to hospital. All those involved in the incident were sober. Traffic police confiscated the Dacia driver's license.
Police remind us:
Cyclists are classified as Vulnerable Road Users for good reason. When riding a bicycle, we are not protected by a vehicle body, seat belts or airbags. Particular attention must also be paid to observing our surroundings, because every collision or fall can have unpleasant or tragic consequences.
It is not only pedestrians and cyclists who should follow traffic rules. The same applies to drivers, who should exercise particular caution and comply with traffic regulations.
Safety largely depends on us. Let us remember that pedestrians and cyclists are also full-fledged road users—the difference is that in a collision with a speeding car, they stand no chance. We appeal for caution and imagination!
