The Homeland Defence Act introduced a new type of military service – voluntary compulsory military service. This form of military service is intended for all those who have never previously served in the military. It makes it possible to complete military training and, in the future, join the reserves or enter the professional army.

Until recently, people interested in serving in the military could, for example, apart from studying at a military academy or completing an officer or non-commissioned officer course, apply for preparatory service. However, this latter option was abolished by the Homeland Defence Act, which has been in force since April 23, 2022. A new form of active service for volunteers appeared in place of preparatory service – voluntary compulsory military service. Applying for it is the first step toward being called up to serve in the Polish Armed Forces.
