On April 23, officers from the District Police Headquarters in Strzelin arrested two residents of Strzelin Municipality—a woman and a man. – The evidence collected in the case shows that the couple misled other people about the man’s health, as a result of which the victims, seeking to help, donated money for his treatment – explains Staff Aspirant Piotr Sołtysiak, press officer of the Strzelin District Police Headquarters.
And he adds: – It turned out that his illness had been made up, and the perpetrators exploited donors’ desire to help in order to enrich themselves.
Police charged the arrested man with more than a dozen counts involving fraud and document forgery, to which he confessed. The 39-year-old woman was also charged with fraud.
Headquarters:
During their activities, officers secured falsified medical records and a forged doctor’s stamp at the suspect’s residence.
It was established that more than 7,000 people had been defrauded—and these figures concern just one online fundraiser! The estimated value of the donors’ losses is at least several hundred thousand zlotys.
At the prosecutor’s request, the court ordered both suspects to be held in pretrial detention. They face up to eight years in prison.
