One of the items on the agenda of the January session of the Bolesławiec City Council was a vote on a draft resolution concerning the naming of a roundabout in the city of Bolesławiec. (This refers to the roundabout located along Helena and Wincenty Tyrankiewiczów Street.) The document’s justification states:
The Association of Anti-Communist Opposition Activists and Repressed Persons “NIEZŁOMNI” in Wrocław, Bolesławiec Branch, submitted an initiative to the Chair of the Bolesławiec City Council to name the roundabout along Helena and Wincenty Tyrankiewiczów Street, located within the boundaries of plots marked with cadastral numbers part 327 and part 471, precinct 0009, Bolesławiec-9, “Roundabout of the Student Committee of Social Resistance.” In the justification of its application, the Association wrote:
“Giving the roundabout this name would commemorate the anti-communist underground organization established at the beginning of 1982 by students of Bolesławiec secondary schools, called the STUDENT COMMITTEE OF SOCIAL RESISTANCE – UKOS.
Over the seven years of UKOS’s activity in the city of Bolesławiec, approximately one hundred students from Bolesławiec secondary schools passed through its structures and participated in its activities in various forms. In the circumstances of the martial law introduced in 1981, and against the backdrop of the underground anti-communist organizations operating in Poland at that time, this was undoubtedly an exceptional achievement.
Naming the roundabout located here would be a symbolic gesture of remembrance and thanks to all members of the underground student organization for their contribution to the struggle for an independent Poland.
It was precisely from the schools located near the roundabout—the Władysław Broniewski General Secondary School and the Ignacy Domeyko Mining Schools Complex—that the organization’s founders and the vast majority of its members were recruited.”
Six councillors voted in favor, with none opposed and none abstaining. The resolution will enter into force 14 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
