Last Friday, a few minutes after midnight, officers from the Traffic Division of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica, patrolling the city on Wrocławska Street, wanted to stop the driver of a VW vehicle for a traffic check. The police activated their lights and siren to stop the vehicle. Seeing the signals given by the officers, the man suddenly accelerated.
A police chase began after the VW driver, attempting to escape, committed a number of traffic violations, including failing to comply with road signs. At the Głogowska Gate, the man lost control of the vehicle, hit a fence at the intersection, and then crashed into a glass pavilion and a road sign.
During the identity check, it turned out that the VW was being driven by a 17-year-old, who had a 15-year-old friend in the car. The young man told the officers that he had fled because he did not have a driving licence. He was tested with a breathalyser, which showed that he was sober.
The officers also confirmed in the police information system that he did not have a driving licence. The vehicle was removed with roadside assistance. The 15-year-old passenger was handed over to his parents, while the 17-year-old was arrested and placed in a police cell.
The young people's lack of driving skills, particularly on a wet and icy surface, could have ended tragically. However, the outcome of this reckless drive was fortunate, as none of the participants in the nighttime escapade suffered bodily injuries.
The young man will appear before the court as an adult. He faces up to five years in prison, a substantial fine and a driving ban.
