– Police forensic technicians secure various traces at the scene of a crime; some of them are immediately useful and help identify a suspect, while others are recorded in police databases and serve as comparison material – explains junior asp. Tomasz Nowak, press officer of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław. – This practice makes it possible to find perpetrators of crimes committed even many years ago.
That was the case here. Spokesperson: – In 2010, an officer of the Investigative Department of the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec secured a trace in the form of a fingerprint at the scene of a theft of car parts. Many years later, the man who left that fingerprint committed further property offences, and his fingerprint traces provided grounds for verifying fingerprints that had previously been stored in the database as unidentified. By comparing them, the police established that he may have been the person who committed the theft many years earlier.
The 39-year-old from Bolesławiec County was charged with the theft he committed in 2010. The man admitted his guilt. He now faces between three months and as much as five years in prison.
