The Minister of the Interior and Administration Mariusz Kamiński presented the Andrzej Struj Police Subcommissioner Medals to 83 police officers from across the country. Two police officers from Bolesławiec County received decorations: Sgt. Wojciech Szuter and Senior Constable Dariusz Herdzik.

In the afternoon of January 2023, while patrolling the Nowogrodziec municipality, Sergeant Wojciech Szuter and Senior Constable Dariusz Herdzik noticed clouds of smoke rising above one of the village houses. They immediately went to the scene to determine the cause and check whether the residents were in danger.
As they approached the buildings, they noticed that a fire was burning on the first floor of the house, so they immediately notified the duty officer and went inside. On the ground floor, elderly people were sleeping in one of the rooms. The couple were surprised to see the police officers because they were unaware that fire was spreading above their heads.
The officers helped the elderly couple leave the building safely. They led the 82-year-old woman out and carried the ill 86-year-old man from the burning house. Once the officers had made sure that no one else’s life was in danger, they closed the windows and disconnected the gas.
Sergeant Wojciech Szuter has been serving in the Police since 2017; initially, he served in the Patrol and Intervention Unit of the Bolesławiec County Police Headquarters. He is currently a community police officer at the Police Station in Osiecznica.
Senior Constable Dariusz Herdzik joined the Police in 2021 and serves in the Prevention Team of the Police Station in Nowogrodziec.

Let us recall. The incident occurred on January 22. Officers from the Police Station in Nowogrodziec, while patrolling the municipality, noticed clouds of smoke rising above one of the houses. They immediately went to the scene to determine the cause and check whether the residents were in danger.

As they approached the buildings, they noticed that one of the houses was on fire on the first floor, so they immediately notified the duty officer and went inside. On the ground floor, elderly people were sleeping in one of the rooms. The couple were surprised to see the police officers because they were unaware that fire was spreading above their heads.
They added:
The officers helped the elderly couple leave the building safely. They led the 82-year-old woman out and carried the ill 86-year-old man from the burning house. Once the officers had made sure that no one else’s life was in danger, they closed the windows and disconnected the gas.
Firefighters then arrived at the scene and began firefighting operations, eliminating the danger.
Volunteer firefighters from Nowogrodziec reported:
(...) at 3:12 p.m., we were dispatched urgently to a fire in a residential building in Zebrzydowa.
They also added:
The rooms were searched; textiles, newspapers and a washing machine were burning in one of the rooms. One water stream was immediately applied, extinguishing the fire. The wooden floor was dismantled to rule out hidden sources of fire.
