As reported by the Polish National Police Headquarters:

Police officers handle many incidents every day reported via the emergency number 112. Some concern road accidents, while others involve family disputes. Officers take every report very seriously. However, there are calls after which all emergency services are placed on the highest alert. When officers respond, it turns out that the caller has summoned a patrol without justification.

Officers presented three examples of this type of behavior:

  • A person called a patrol because their allegedly drunk father was causing a disturbance at home. The police patrol determined at the scene that the father was sober, but intended to leave the house and, as usual, buy alcohol, drink it, and then—according to the caller—cause a disturbance after returning home.
  • A person called a police patrol because, according to their account, some people were loitering near the house. At the scene, it turned out that the person had called the police because they were in conflict with a neighbor. When the neighbor and his son were doing some work outside the house in the evening, this person deliberately told the police that they were strangers, solely to annoy the neighbor.
  • A man reported to the police that his wife was preventing him from seeing his children and asked for an intervention. At the scene, officers determined that the man had not been at the place where the alleged obstruction of contact with the children was supposed to have occurred. He had called only to have confirmation that he had reported such a matter to the police.

Officers:

Warning: Unjustified and rashly reaching for the telephone merely to speak to a dispatcher and mislead them may result in a situation where emergency services, occupied with unnecessary tasks, fail to respond in time to a genuine report involving the saving of a human life.

They add:

Worth knowing: There are many such reports and similar ones. Before dialing the emergency number, one should consider whether the matter one wishes to report requires police intervention. It should be remembered that while the emergency line is being blocked, someone else may urgently need help.

And they warn:

In the event of an unjustified call for police intervention, one should expect legal consequences. (...) People who irresponsibly call the police commit an offense punishable by arrest, restriction of liberty, or a fine of up to PLN 1,500.
