Today, at the request of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica, the court ordered the pre-trial detention of a 24-year-old man who, several days ago, while intoxicated, fatally struck a young woman in the Sienkiewicza Housing Estate.
The tragic incident occurred in Legnica on 19 July 2023. – That day, police officers received a report about intoxicated men travelling in a car and buying more alcohol. When the vehicle was located, its driver began fleeing from the police – reports Lidia Tkaczyszyn, press spokeswoman for the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica.
She adds: – Driving at high speed along a residential street, the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a 21-year-old woman who was walking. An expert initially estimated the vehicle’s speed at approximately 70–80 km/h. Meanwhile, the speed limit at the scene was 30 km/h.
Investigators determined that the force of the impact was so great that the woman was thrown several metres; her body flew over a fence and landed on private property. She died at the scene.
The driver was 24-year-old Ukrainian manual worker Vadym L.. He was not licensed to drive. Prosecutor L. Tkaczyszyn said: – Tests for alcohol in exhaled air showed 1.26 mg/l of alcohol (approximately 2.5 per mille). Two Ukrainians travelling with Vadym L. were also intoxicated.
What are the charges?
The prosecutor charged L. with murder with conditional intent. The foreign national faces up to life imprisonment. (The additional charges concern driving while intoxicated and failing to comply with an order from police officers to stop the vehicle.)

Due to the need to ensure the proper course of the proceedings, the real risk of obstruction and flight, as well as the severe sentence facing the suspect, the prosecutor submitted an application to the court for pre-trial detention of Vadym L.
