The chase took place on 18 July 2023, at around 11 p.m. – During a patrol in Piechowice, on Cieplicka Street, police officers noticed a VW with a faulty left headlight. When the driver saw the police car, he suddenly accelerated – reports Sub-inspector Edyta Bagrowska, press officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra.

She adds:

The officers decided to stop the vehicle for a traffic check. They activated their light and sound signals and signalled to the driver to stop. However, the driver did not react; instead, he accelerated and began to flee.

The officers began a pursuit and notified the police duty officer, who dispatched further patrols to the operation. The spokesperson said: – While fleeing, the driver endangered other road users. He drove at high speed, overtook at a pedestrian crossing, drove along the pavement and a grass verge, and drove against traffic at a roundabout.

She also adds: – After driving several kilometres, in Jelenia Góra on Cieplicka Street, the man, trying to avoid being stopped, hit a police car, skidded and crashed into a fence. He was arrested afterwards.

It turned out that the driver was a 24-year-old resident of Jelenia Góra who was carrying two passengers. The driver was sober, but did not have a driving licence. He did, however, have... drugs on him: marijuana and methamphetamine.

That was not the end of it. Sub-inspector E. Bagrowska:

The driver's blood was taken for testing to determine whether he had been driving under the influence of narcotic substances.

The irresponsible 24-year-old was taken into police custody. He faces up to five years in prison.
