– Road incidents occurring at railway crossings very often have tragic consequences. Unfortunately, there are drivers who disregard the applicable regulations. Such irresponsible behaviour was recorded by officers from the Zgorzelec SPEED group – reports Police Commissioner Agnieszka Goguł, press officer for the Head of the County Police Headquarters in Zgorzelec.
She adds: – The driver of a Skoda entered the railway crossing despite the red signal displayed by the signal light. For this offence, the 46-year-old resident of Żagań County was fined PLN 2,000 and received 15 penalty points.
What should you remember?
The uniformed officers advise:
- When approaching or crossing a railway crossing, exercise particular caution.
- Before entering the tracks, make sure that no railway vehicle is approaching.
- You may enter the crossing only once the barriers have been fully raised and the crossing signals have been switched off.
- Drive at a speed that allows you to stop the vehicle at any time.
- If your vehicle becomes immobilised on a railway crossing, remove it from the tracks immediately; if this is impossible, leave the vehicle quickly.
- Never attempt to drive around lowered barriers, enter a crossing when there is no room to continue driving, or overtake other vehicles at the crossing.
- An approaching train cannot brake immediately. Therefore, the driver bears full responsibility for crossing the railway crossing safely. It does not matter whether the crossing has barriers, traffic lights, or only a sign. We urge you always to stop before entering the tracks and check whether you can safely cross to the other side.
- Exercise particular care and caution around unguarded crossings.
