The reader sent us a photo and video of the cutting down of a 150-year-old oak in Osiecznica. They added that the tree was cut down “in a Natura 2000 area during the breeding season, in a protected area”.
We asked the municipal authorities about the matter. Osiecznica Municipal Office:
(...) we hereby inform you that, in connection with previous events involving a tree growing near the playground, which fell over as a result of strong winds, damaging its components, Węgliniec Forest District inspected its stand in this area and decided to remove trees which, due to their health condition, could pose a threat to the life and health of people staying on the playground premises and in its vicinity.
Officials add:
Moreover, the tree posed a threat to road users because it grew within an intersection, right next to the edge of the roadway, narrowing the road clearance, and also restricted visibility for drivers joining the traffic.
They also emphasize:
According to information obtained from Węgliniec Forest District, compensatory plantings will be carried out in the area in question.
