Two residents of Bolesławiec County decided to steal wood. However, they were not content with just anything. They targeted a huge oak, approximately 120–150 years old, which by its size alone qualified for protected natural monument status.

They carried out their plan. However, they did so so ineptly that the tree fell in a different direction than they had expected. It is a miracle that neither of them was killed. After confirming the report that the oak had been felled, the Forest Guard initially searched the area for the bodies of the “loggers.”

What’s more, the criminal masterminds had not thought their actions through at all. To take away their loot, they would have needed heavy equipment. A single slice of the felled oak weighs anywhere from several dozen to several hundred kilograms. As foresters say, there was no way to roll these rounds out of the forest.

The damage caused by the thieves was estimated at PLN 48,000. One of the criminals was caught red-handed.

As a reminder, theft is punishable by between three months and as much as five years in prison.
