The Cross of Freedom and Solidarity was established by the Sejm on 5 August 2010. It was awarded for the first time in June 2011, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the public protests in Radom. The Cross is conferred by the President of the Republic of Poland, at the request of the president of the Institute of National Remembrance, on opposition activists who opposed the communist dictatorship, for activities aimed at restoring Poland’s independence and sovereignty or for respecting human rights in the Polish People’s Republic. The Cross of Independence from the Second Polish Republic served as the model for the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity.
