With the aim of improving safety and reducing crime and vandalism, some cities in Poland have nighttime bans on alcohol sales. For example, such a ban was introduced in Wrocław in 2018. There, the ban applies from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and covers the city center. Similar bans are also in force, among other places, in Kraków, Poznań, Bydgoszcz, Łódź and Katowice.
Introducing a ban on alcohol sales in a given city falls within the competence of the local government. Such powers were granted by the legislature. Some bans introduced by local governments apply only to stores, excluding restaurants and clubs, and are limited to city centers. Do such bans actually help improve safety?
Should a ban on alcohol sales be introduced in Bolesławiec on weekend nights, applying, for example, within the paid parking zone?
