The incident occurred on Monday, October 10. Nadleśnictwo Bolesławiec:

It was an ordinary morning, around 7:15 a.m., when I received a call from the Bolesławiec Fire Service.

The firefighter on duty at the command post in the County Headquarters informed me by phone that there was a fire near fire road no. 27 in the Bolesławiec forest district.

As it turned out, the fire had started during the night. The foresters said: “It may not have been particularly unusual, but it was certainly spectacular. Smoke covered a forest area the size of several football pitches.

It emerged that the fire had started in the roots of an overturned spruce root ball. The foresters explain:

A root ball is formed when a falling tree pulls up soil overgrown with its roots, creating a wall of soil and roots.

They added:

The cause of the fire was unknown; it certainly was not spontaneous combustion, perhaps a cigarette butt, or perhaps a small campfire. In any case, we are pleased that the fire was detected early.

They also emphasized: “We would like to sincerely thank the anonymous person who reported it and our colleagues from the State Fire Service Headquarters in Bolesławiec.
