A court decision resulted in the perpetrator of the brazen theft being placed in temporary custody for three months. He faces up to 8 years in prison.

Officers from the Criminal Department of the Bolesławiec Police arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the brazen theft of a passenger car. On August 1 in Nowogrodziec, the perpetrator snatched the car keys from the owner and caused the woman to fall while attempting to drive away; she had tried to prevent the thief from leaving in the vehicle. The losses caused by the criminal acts amounted to nearly 7,500 zlotys.

Police additionally established that the suspect had another similar offense to his name. Several days earlier in Bolesławiec, the 27-year-old also committed a brazen theft while pretending to want to buy a vehicle. Posing as a customer, after a test drive the 27-year-old took advantage of the moment when the owner got out of the car to prepare the paperwork and drove away in someone else’s vehicle. The stolen vehicle contained a phone and payment cards, which he later used to break into bank accounts and pay for his purchases. The losses were estimated at nearly 5,000 zlotys.

The suspect was charged with a total of 7 offenses, 2 of them concerning brazen thefts. He will also answer for breaking into bank accounts and stealing from them, stealing fuel worth more than 1,500 zlotys, shoplifting power tools worth more than 900 zlotys, and driving a car despite a court ban and a decision revoking his driving privileges.

The police officers, prosecutor and judge were all unanimous that a custodial preventive measure was necessary. The 27-year-old was placed in temporary custody for 3 months. He faces up to 10 years in prison for the acts committed.
