As reported by the Zgorzelec police:
Based on the evidence collected, a 20-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County was charged with the burglary and theft of an Audi worth PLN 280,000, driving despite a court-imposed ban, and driving under the influence of intoxicating substances.
The young man faces a prison sentence of between one and as many as ten years.
At the prosecutor’s request, the court ordered three months of pre-trial detention for the detained man.
The Zgorzelec police headquarters reported the following about the entire incident on Friday:
The duty officer at the Zgorzelec police headquarters was notified that a man had been detained by a citizen after driving an Audi at excessive speed through the streets of Zgorzelec, disregarding traffic regulations and rules entirely. He forced other drivers to brake sharply and caused collisions with several vehicles. He damaged the car he was driving so severely that it was no longer possible to continue the reckless drive, at which point he decided to flee on foot. One of the witnesses to his irresponsible behavior, who was riding a motorcycle, noticed this. Moments later, he apprehended the man, who was then detained by local police officers.
Officers who intervened at the scene established that the Audi was being driven by a 20-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County. His behavior clearly indicated that he might be under the influence of intoxicating substances. A drug test confirmed these suspicions: the detainee had been driving under the influence of methamphetamine. In addition, checks of police databases showed that he was subject to a court-imposed driving ban in all vehicle categories.
The officers added:
Traffic officers who handled the road incidents caused by the man confirmed that the driver caused collisions with seven vehicles in Zgorzelec. Immediately after crossing the border into our country, he hit a BMW, then struck a passenger Mercedes on Pułaskiego Street; on Traugutta Street, he collided with an Opel, and at the intersection of Traugutta and Kościuszki streets, he hit a Toyota and a Mercedes, which was recorded by the city surveillance cameras. Another incident occurred on Kościuszki Street, before the intersection with Kamieniarska Street, where the driver hit a properly driven Ford, which, as a result of the collision, struck a Volkswagen.
