The incident occurred during the night of May 29–30, 2022, at around 1:00 a.m. – Police officers in Jelenia Góra noticed a Ford vehicle with Wrocław registration plates on one of the city’s streets. When he saw them, the driver changed direction and accelerated sharply. The officers decided to check the reason for the driver’s strange behavior and signaled him to stop – reports asp. szt. Monika Kaleta from the press team of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław. – However, he did not react; instead, he accelerated and began to flee. The officers activated their lights and sirens and set off after him.
The man drove along National Road 3 toward Szklarska Poręba, using the entire width of the road and driving against traffic; he blocked the way of the patrol cars following him. The spokesperson said: – At the exit toward Górzyniec, in Piechowice, the driver, wanting to avoid being stopped, hit a police patrol car, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and end up in a ditch.
He then abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot, but was quickly apprehended.
The desperate man turned out to be a 37-year-old resident of Wrocław. It emerged that he had been driving despite a court-imposed driving ban. What is more, the fugitive’s behavior suggested that he may have been driving under the influence of intoxicating substances. His blood was taken for testing. He was also wanted by the Wrocław police.
The Wrocław resident was taken into police custody. He now faces between three months and as many as five years in prison.
