After a two-year break forced by the pandemic, we have finally reached the 27th edition of our annual festival and warmly invite you to the Löbau Engine Shed Days (Löbauer Maschinenhaustage).

This year we are celebrating under the motto: “Sometimes less means more!” Let yourselves be taken back to the bygone era of historic railways with a rich programme of varied experiences!

This year, the East Saxon Railway Enthusiasts are a partner in the ceremonial “Lighting of the Steam Locomotives”, marking the start of the season under steam. The annual event was established on the initiative of narrow-gauge railways, clubs and partners of the Saxon Steam Railway Route. The main attraction will be steam locomotive 52 8141-5, which finally returned to its home engine shed at the beginning of April after an extensive overhaul. May the locomotive serve its colleagues for as long as possible, hauling special trains along the iron road…

Everyone interested in taking a steam train ride is invited to the former goods station opposite the station building, where the crew of 52 8141-5 awaits curious and knowledge-hungry visitors.

The East Saxon Railway Enthusiasts have prepared a wide range of other attractions, including:

  • Model railways: The former goods station building now houses the OSEF club’s entire model railway section. A large number of layouts in various scales, from N to G, are displayed across an area of 700 m². A particular attraction is likely to be the narrow-gauge railway layout from Taubenheim via Oppach to Dürrhennersdorf – the line was closed in 1945
  • Historic bus: A historic Ikarus 263-series bus will run a shuttle service between the station, the engine shed and the former goods station. Ikarus buses were, of course, also commonly seen in Poland. The bus ride is included in the admission price.
  • Diesel locomotive parade by the turntable: shunting diesel locomotives that worked on Deutsche Reichsbahn’s tracks, with particular emphasis on Upper Lusatia, will be presented there. A particularly interesting exhibit is the V22B locomotive, which worked on the sidings of the mechanical spinning mill in Kirschau.
  • Railcar 772 413: The Löbau Engine Shed Days will also be the last opportunity to see our railcar 772 413 on the line. Thanks to a special permit, it will run on the preserved section of the legendary line to Cunewalde. Today, from the stop behind the engine shed, it is possible to travel uphill only as far as the Old Brickworks – beyond that stop, the B 178 federal road crosses the railway line and effectively prevents any further journey...

Souvenir sales, further railway exhibitions and a raffle round out the main programme.

To ensure the guests’ well-being, the colleagues will serve tasty dishes made from local products. To create the right atmosphere, the NEA band will perform on Saturday; on Sunday morning, children from the municipal kindergarten will sing, and from 2:00 p.m. the Schlegler Blasmusikanten brass band will perform – a local ensemble whose repertoire consists mostly of folk music.

Admission: €6 per adult / €4 for children and young people (4–16 years)

Opening hours: Saturday (07.05) and Sunday (08.05), from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

You can of course travel to Löbau and back by train using a EURO-NYSA ticket. On the Polish side, it is valid from Bolesławiec. The EURO-NYSA ticket costs PLN 40 per person, while the group version for up to 5 people costs PLN 100.
