After nearly ten years since the last passenger trains disappeared, Nowogrodziec has once again appeared in plans for the development of railway infrastructure. This is due to the ambitious concept of the so-called Western Main Line, which PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe is working on.
As reported by Rynek Kolejowy, the project involves creating a series of connections running along Poland’s western border—from Świnoujście and Szczecin to Jelenia Góra. Although most of the route would use existing lines, the missing section of infrastructure in the Lubań area is of key importance.
Marta Pabiańska from the press team of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe informed the aforementioned outlet Marta Pabiańska, that an approximately seven-kilometre connector between railway lines no. 279 and 283 is planned. She added that as a result, the Lubań Śląski and Nowogrodziec stations could become important transfer points.
It is this connector that could enable more direct and faster connections, which until now have been impossible or uncompetitive compared with road transport.
The matter was analysed by eluban.pl:
Looking at the map and assuming that the new section of track would be approximately 7 km long, the connector could be built near the Gierałtów and Gierałtów-Wykroty stops, creating a direct connection between Lubań and Nowogrodziec.
If the project goes ahead, Nowogrodziec could become an important transfer point on the map of Lower Silesia. For residents, this would mean not only more convenient travel, but also greater opportunities for economic development and better access to jobs and education.
We will certainly return to this topic.
