Police officers from Bolesławiec warn against fraudsters impersonating “PGE”, who use text messages to demand payment of an outstanding amount. This is not a new method used by fraudsters, who unfortunately often return to old and proven techniques. A similar phishing campaign was used by thieves as early as last year. The message states that an additional payment is required and includes a link supposedly allowing the problem to be resolved quickly. It leads to a fake website where the victim can choose from several payment methods. At this point, the fraudsters attempt to obtain card details or logins and passwords for electronic banking.

A warning has appeared on the PGE website explaining how to distinguish a genuine text message from a fraudster’s message: “the company stresses that text messages reminding customers about overdue payments always include the customer number, while they do not contain a link directing to online payment systems”.

Pay attention to who is writing to us and what they are saying. Do not use links received from unknown people, and do not use them to log in to your online banking. Do not enter your card number anywhere, and do not enter generated Blik codes. To avoid falling victim to fraudsters, exercise particular caution.

If you let your guard down and clicked a link sent by text message, contact your bank immediately using another phone. Also notify the Police. You must respond without delay.
