The incident occurred on Sunday, February 13, in one of the courtyards in Bolesławiec. The bird could not free itself from a plastic shopping bag, known as a “zrywka.” Two Bolesławiec residents came to its aid.
A reader sent us a message in which she described the entire incident as follows:
We happened to be at the playground in the Żwirki i Wigury courtyard because we were returning from town, and there is this little playground here. Next to the dumpster... there was rubbish everywhere... and suddenly a pigeon flew out from underneath the dumpster with this bag. We watched it, and my husband, who knows a bit about these things, immediately realized that it was a young pigeon and that it would soon get tired—and that is what happened.
It was clear that it wanted to rest on the roof, but the plastic bag kept getting in its way, so it flew around in circles. I happened to have some doughnuts, but I threw just enough to encourage it to fly down toward our feet, and that is what happened. It came down to us and walked around for a while, but apparently it was hungry enough to come closer. My husband has quick reflexes—he caught it quickly and removed the bag.
The reader adds:
Let people see what they are contributing to... Rubbish is lying under the dumpster—is it really so difficult to put it in? The pigeon was looking for food. It became entangled in the plastic bag. Fortunately, hunger was stronger than fear, and we managed to catch it.
The bird was freed. Without the people’s help, it might not have survived.
