This tragic incident occurred on Thursday, December 16, on national road no. 30 in Nowa Karczma. Asp. szt. Justyna Bujakiewicz-Rodzeń, press officer of the District Police Headquarters in Lubań:
According to the police officers’ preliminary findings, the driver of a Volkswagen Golf passenger car […] failed to adjust his speed to the road conditions, exceeded the speed limit applicable on that section of road, then crossed a double solid line and began overtaking a truck.
While carrying out this dangerous manoeuvre, he entered the opposite lane and collided with a Passat. One of the passengers died from his injuries. The other injured people from both Volkswagens were taken to hospital.
The spokesperson:
The Golf driver did not have a driving licence, and preliminary tests carried out at the scene showed that he had been driving under the influence of drugs.
The Golf driver was also taken to hospital, where he remained under police guard. He was later placed in police custody.
On December 20, the Lubań court, at the request of the police and prosecutor’s office, remanded the 27-year-old driver in temporary custody. The man now faces between two and 12 years in prison.
The officers:
Once again, we appeal to all road users to exercise caution on the roads. Haste, distraction and irresponsibility can lead to loss of health or even life. We remind you that criminal liability for causing a road accident under the influence of drugs is the same as in the case of causing an accident under the influence of alcohol.
