The incident occurred after 12:00 at a water reservoir on Krępnica, right next to the motorway. The ice broke beneath two elderly anglers. Both fell into the water. The men were about 15 metres from the shore. They held on to a piece of ice. They were almost completely submerged, with only their heads above the surface.
The firefighters used a ladder and a flat stretcher to reach the men. The anglers still had enough strength to tie ropes around themselves. Both had been in the water for at least twenty minutes.
People watching the incident said that the anglers had behaved very recklessly. Temperatures had been above freezing for several days, and the ice along the reservoir’s shore had melted.
