On Tuesday, November 30, officers from the Border Guard post in Jelenia Góra selected a passenger car with Czech registration plates for inspection. “The driver was a 41-year-old Czech national. During the inspection of his documents, Border Guard officers discovered that he was wanted under an order issued by the District Court in Chełm to serve 50 days of substitute imprisonment imposed in lieu of an unpaid fine amounting to PLN 16,000,” explains Border Guard Major Joanna Konieczniak, press spokesperson for the Nadodrzański Border Guard Unit.
The 41-year-old had the option of paying the outstanding fine, took advantage of this option and was released. Such a high fine was imposed on him for smuggling cigarettes from Ukraine.
The spokesperson adds:
The Czech national and his colleague impersonated members of the diplomatic corps and claimed to be diplomats. In this way, they attempted to avoid border and customs inspections.
