Officers of the Independent Preventive Police Unit in Legnica, serving in the Bolesławiec area, apprehended a 33-year-old man after a chase. In the city center, the officers wanted to inspect the driver. Despite the use of light and sound signals from a marked police patrol, the resident of Lwówek County failed to stop and began fleeing.
First, he fled through the city streets, where, among other things, he forced the right of way at intersections against an ambulance passing by and drove through a red light, overtook other drivers in prohibited places, and drove the wrong way around a roundabout. After leaving the city, the man continued fleeing along county roads. Once he entered a wooded area, he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He was apprehended after several dozen meters.
It turned out that the driver was intoxicated. The man had 1.4 parts per mille of alcohol in his exhaled breath. In addition, a court-imposed ban on driving all motor vehicles had been in effect against the detainee since June 1, 2021. The car was also not approved for road use and had registration plates from another vehicle.
During further proceedings, the officers received a report that, several minutes before the police intervention, the suspect had stolen fuel from one of the gas stations in Bolesławiec.
The 33-year-old, during a period of heavy traffic, violated regulations and forced other drivers to react abruptly, thereby endangering other road users. The man has already been charged with causing a direct danger of a land-traffic disaster.
By a court decision following a motion from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Bolesławiec, the detainee was remanded in custody for three months. He faces up to 8 years in prison.
