A large tree branch broke off and fell onto the fence of the stadium on Spółdzielcza Street in Bolesławiec. Fortunately, no one was injured. The tree from which the branch broke off had previously been attacked by a fungus called chicken of the woods (photo below).
Although the fungus was removed from the tree, it had already weakened it. At the place where it grew, a white coating remained on the tree’s bark. Unfortunately, the appearance of chicken of the woods on a tree foretells the tree’s death within the next several years.
We appeal to the authorities to check the condition of the tree. More of its branches may break off.
Wikipedia on chicken of the woods:
(...) It mainly attacks deciduous trees, both weakened specimens and completely healthy ones. Fruit bodies most often develop on a still-living tree. It causes intense brown rot of the wood, first in the heartwood and later in the sapwood, often resulting in the formation of cavities in the wood. A tree affected by it dies within several years.
Chicken of the woods is deadly to trees, but pleasing to the eye and edible for humans. On the istotne.pl portal, we devoted a separate article to it entitled: Chicken of the woods, or “Forest Chicken,” on trees in Bolesławiec.
