The incident took place in March. “After receiving a report of a car theft, officers from the criminal division of the Lwówek command became involved in the case. Among other things, thanks to surveillance footage from one of the properties in the locality where the incident was allegedly supposed to have occurred, officers established that the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the Renault did not match the version of events presented by the person making the report,” reports Sergeant Olga Łukaszewicz, press officer for the Lwówek KPP.

The spokeswoman adds:

As it turned out, the 40-year-old man from Legnica County, who left his vehicle near the cemetery in Dłużec (Lwówek Śląski commune) and then reported it stolen, had himself contributed to its disappearance.

The result? The status of the person making the report changed dramatically. The officers said: “He is no longer the victim of a crime, but a person suspected of committing a crime.”

The 40-year-old has already been charged with filing a false report of a crime that did not occur and giving false testimony. He now faces between six months and as many as eight years in prison.
