Online shopping has become increasingly popular during the pandemic. Creative online criminals decided to take advantage of this fact. Bolesławiec County Police Headquarters:
In recent days, Bolesławiec police officers have received reports concerning money being lost from bank accounts after recipients clicked on a link they received and provided their details.
How do the scammers do it?
Police officers:
People offering various items for sale received messages through a sales platform or the WhatsApp application. They were contacted by people who allegedly had purchased the listed items, informing them that the money would be sent through the service’s transaction platform.
The sellers received a link that redirected them to a website deceptively similar to the genuine classifieds service. To receive the payment for the goods, they had to provide their card number and other important information, which gave the criminals easy access to their bank accounts and the ability to make a transfer.
They add:
Police officers warn against sharing personal data and information related to managing our funds online.
A reminder: fraud is punishable by between six months and as many as eight years in prison.
