The tragic incident occurred on March 20, in the evening, in Olszyna (Lubań County). The 22-year-old driver of an Opel, Krzysztof, entered a lit pedestrian crossing and struck a man walking across it. The victim died in hospital.

“The case is highly controversial,” says attorney Wojciech Kasprzyk. “We are dealing with a young man who was driving to a friend’s house in the evening to pick up books. He is a student. He is someone who looks after his sick parents. He is the only person who helps them. An honest young man who, in addition to working and studying, tried to behave well and help people. And a tragedy occurred. There was an accident; a man died. The case is particularly ambiguous because we know that, sadly, the deceased person was under the influence of alcohol. A tragedy occurred; my client struck this man, and the impact was so strong that the man died. We are very seriously concerned about the entire situation surrounding the ambulance service. I know that a helicopter landed but did not take the injured man. An ambulance arrived. It also did not take the man who had been struck because there was another person in it. Another ambulance arrived and, instead of taking the injured man to the hospital in Lubań, which was the closest, he was taken to the more distant hospital in Zgorzelec. Our question now is: why did such failings occur?” asks Krzysztof S.’s defense attorney.

Krzysztof’s parents are deeply affected by what happened. Suddenly, they found themselves under fire from people commenting on the situation who knew absolutely nothing about their son.

“We are devastated and shocked because this whole situation is unlike our son,” says Karina, Krzysztof’s mother. “Our son was always a responsible person. After this incident, I got to know my child anew. My husband and I are ill, and our son was our support. We often asked him for help in various situations, and he would always say, ‘All right, I’ll do it,’ although sometimes he had little time for us. Only after this incident did it turn out that there were also people who needed his help. I am now learning that our child was always ready and helped others whenever he could. He helped others, and now the response from strangers has given us so much energy; without it, we would have completely broken down. And the good he did for others is now coming back to us because these people want to help us now,” says his mother.

Krzysztof’s parents have received more than 200 declarations of support for their son, including a heartfelt letter from Krzysztof’s friend.

Krzysiek has been my friend since primary school. I introduced him to his new class when he moved to […]. Since then, you could say that we have been like brothers. I have known him for most of my life, and I know that he is a good, responsible person and, above all, a friend I can always count on. He has already proved more than once that he is one of the most important people in my life. For example, when my parents lived abroad and I stayed with my grandmother, Krzysiek was a tremendous source of support for me. He invited me to his house for meals, I could spend the night there, and we spent a great deal of time together. Later, we remained friends through changing schools, failed relationships, and difficult turning points in life. I could always rely on him. I cannot imagine him being absent from my life. For years, I have consistently considered him an example of a person who can change someone’s life for the better.

Attorney Wojciech Kasprzyk announces that the law firm will fight to have the young man released from custody. The lawyers and parents ask all witnesses to the incident to contact the law firm. You can also sign the petition Prison NO for Krzysiek.
