The “Uroczysko Piekiełko” dendrological garden is located within the Lwówek Śląski Forest District, between Żeliszów and Włodzice Małe.

The Forest District’s website still features an entry from 2015 encouraging visitors to see this place, along with a photograph.

The “Uroczysko Piekiełko” dendrological garden is a charming place deep in the forest, equipped with signs identifying the species of trees and shrubs growing there. The “garden” also features educational boards from which visitors can learn about our Forest District as well as issues related to nature conservation and ecology. “Uroczysko Piekiełko” is also a place where visitors can meet a forester during nature and forestry classes.

A reader shared current photographs of Uroczysko from 2021 with us. Unfortunately, it does not resemble the one shown on the Forest District’s website.

I would like to show what “Piekiełko” looks like now. It used to be a picturesque place in the middle of the forest, with an island featuring a shelter and a grill. Ivy, which added charm to the place, grew on the footbridge leading to the island. The water seems to have been drained from the ponds; the remaining water is contaminated with something oily, causing fish to die. There is no ivy on the footbridge railings, and in some places the railings themselves are missing.

We asked the Lwówek Śląski Forest District what had happened to this place.

In response to a journalistic inquiry concerning the “Uroczysko Piekiełko” educational site, the Lwówek Śląski Forest District reports that work related to the modernization of the water reservoirs is underway at the site as part of the project “Comprehensive project for adapting forests and forestry to climate change – small-scale retention and prevention of water erosion in mountainous areas.”

The investment is intended to strengthen the resilience of the area covered by the project to threats related to climate change, increase its water-retention capacity, and adapt it to perform nature-related functions by enabling access to water for forest wildlife, as well as creating suitable habitats for animals to live and reproduce.

As part of the construction work, the water was drained from the ponds. The fish were moved to nearby ponds in the Nowogrodziec Forest District. As part of the investment, the existing footbridge will be replaced with a walkway. We hope that thanks to the modernization of the reservoirs, “Uroczysko Piekiełko” will once again be beautiful and well-maintained.
