At that time, the perpetrators broke into or attempted to break into three ATMs. In one case, they used a vehicle to ram the doors of a shop and gained access to its vestibule, where an ATM was located.
On another occasion, they attached straps to a farm tractor and fastened them to an ATM, then tore the device from the ground and took it away in another vehicle. More than half a million zlotys were stolen.
Another break-in attempt failed because the straps the perpetrators had attached to the ATM broke. However, the device was destroyed. An effective pursuit was then launched against one of the perpetrators, who was travelling in a tractor. Subsequent findings by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Bolesławiec and the Police led to the arrest of the remaining perpetrators.
The suspects were charged with breaking into and attempting to commit burglary theft at three ATMs.
It was also established that they had committed other offences, including handling the stolen tractor used in the break-ins, damage to another vehicle, possession of psychotropic substances, and possession of weapons and ammunition.
At the time of his arrest by the Police, one of the perpetrators was armed with a loaded, safety-off pistol ready to fire, ammunition for the weapon, assault grenades, incapacitating gas and a knife.
Another defendant was additionally charged with possessing and producing a psychotropic substance in the form of methamphetamine.
At the request of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Bolesławiec, three suspects were remanded in custody; one was placed under Police supervision and banned from leaving the country.
The indictment in the case was submitted to the Regional Court in Jelenia Góra in August 2019.
On 15 February 2021, the court issued a verdict finding the perpetrators guilty of the offences with which they had been charged. Grzegorz G. was sentenced to 8 years in prison. Krzysztof M. received a sentence of 6 years in prison.
Marcin G. was sentenced to 2 years in prison. Wojciech W. received a sentence of 10 months in prison and a fine of 8,000 zlotys.
The perpetrators were also ordered to compensate the injured bank and shop for the damage.
