The collision occurred on the A4 near the Chojnów-Złotoryja interchange. “The driver of a Ford Focus caused a traffic collision with a DAF truck, then abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Information gathered by police indicated that the man had gone in the direction of Brochocin and was probably intoxicated; during his escape, he reportedly lost his trousers,” reports sub-inspector Jagoda Ekiert, press officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica.
She adds:
Officers immediately began searching for the perpetrator. Złotoryja police officers joined the search of the area and the efforts to apprehend the fugitive. Shortly afterward, they spotted a man walking along the road without trousers or shoes. They immediately passed the information to Chojnów police officers, who detained a man matching the description of the perpetrator.
The 30-year-old had a strong smell of alcohol about him, so officers subjected him to a breathalyzer test. It turned out that the suspect had nearly 2 per mille of alcohol in his breath.
The driver, a resident of Krapkowice County, was placed in police custody. The man admitted to driving while drunk. He explained that he had really wanted a drink and had only alcohol in the car.
The spokeswoman says:
Under the Criminal Code, driving while intoxicated is punishable by up to two years in prison and a driving ban. The 30-year-old will also be held responsible for causing a traffic collision and face a fine and a monetary penalty of between PLN 5,000 and PLN 60,000 payable to the Fund for Assistance to Victims and Post-Penitentiary Assistance.
