The accident occurred on the night of November 19–20 on the road between Brzeźnik and Parzyce. The driver of a Mazda, a 28-year-old resident of Bolesławiec County, struck a pedestrian, a 63-year-old man from Nowogrodziec Municipality. The man died at the scene.

The perpetrator was under the influence of alcohol, but the alcohol concentration in the driver’s blood did not exceed 0.5 per mille. (This is still a misdemeanor, not a crime.)
Moreover, investigators told us that the victim was wearing dark clothing and was in the wrong lane, close to the centerline of the road.
The collision occurred when the perpetrator—as investigators determined—cut across the bend. According to the prosecutor’s office, both parties, by violating safety rules, contributed to this tragic accident.
What is more, the pedestrian had alcohol with him. It is not yet known whether he was under its influence. The prosecutor’s office is awaiting the test results.
What about the perpetrator?
The man has already been charged with causing a fatal accident. He faces a sentence of between six months and as many as eight years in prison.
The suspect is also under police supervision and subject to a ban on leaving the country.

Especially during the autumn and winter period, we appeal for caution behind the wheel. Changing weather conditions, rapidly falling darkness and wet road surfaces mean that drivers should take even greater care of their own safety and that of other road users. We remind pedestrians to wear reflective elements.
Let us remember—reflective elements save lives! After dark, a pedestrian dressed in dark clothing is visible to a driver from a distance of approximately 20–30 meters. A person wearing reflective elements can be seen from 150 meters away. Many tragedies could have been avoided if those involved had worn reflective elements. Let us protect our lives.
