Our Reader asked us to publicize the issue. In an email to the editorial office, he wrote: “The subject has already been highlighted and discussed in the media several times, but despite this I am still concerned about what is happening on Jeleniogórska Street. Forgive my words, residents of the county and municipality, but you are not thinking. By failing to think, you endanger your own health and lives, as well as those of drivers.”
He added: “I wonder whether the municipal police or other authorities responsible for safety have done anything to change this situation? And the measures are really simple. […] The municipal police or the police should submit a request to close the informal parking lot on Jeleniogórska Street.”
In June this year, we wrote that there are many places where pedestrians routinely run across roads without regard for the markings. “There is a crossing on Jeleniogórska Street, but people often take a shortcut,” Kamila Chalewicz, deputy commander of the Bolesławiec Municipal Police, told us at the time. “I myself witnessed a woman with a stroller run across the road in a prohibited place. An adult is responsible for themselves, but when they also put a child at risk, it is difficult to call it anything other than a lack of imagination.”
Little has changed since then. Municipal police officers still intervene there very often, especially on Saturdays. “Our interventions most often end with a warning, but it does happen that we issue someone a fine,” notes Emil Zając, commander of the Municipal Police.
The owner of the plot where drivers have set up an informal parking lot is Olgierd Hoffman, president of the Sopot-based company H & S Construction. On Monday, October 26, we emailed him our questions. So far, we have received no response.
Crossing the road in a prohibited place may result in a fine of up to PLN 100.
