A reader wrote to us via Facebook that the trial of the perpetrator of last year's accident in Nowogrodziec was supposed to take place on September 30:

The perpetrator of the accident has not been punished in any way. There has been no court hearing to this day.

As the person who reported it added, on September 29 it turned out that the hearing had been cancelled after all. And this was another cancellation, as the first one had been called off because of coronavirus.

We asked the Bolesławiec court for comment. Joanna Moroz-Korycka, president of the District Court in Bolesławiec:

In response to the inquiry [...] I inform you that case II K 1016/19, for which the hearing was scheduled for September 30, 2020, did not take place due to the sudden illness of the presiding judge. Previously, the hearing scheduled for April did not take place because of the pandemic, as at that time all hearings and public sessions were cancelled pursuant to an order of the President of the Regional Court in Jelenia Góra.

She adds:

At present, hearings are scheduled at the earliest possible dates; however, due to the number of cases and the temporary restriction on hearing most cases in court from March to June 2020, these dates have been postponed. In the case referred to in the inquiry, I inform you that a new hearing date has been set for November 17, 2020, of which the parties, attorneys and witnesses will be notified without delay.

She also stresses:

At the same time, I inform you that all employees of the District Court in Bolesławiec are working to ensure that proceedings run smoothly and to make up the backlog that arose during the temporary restriction of court operations due to the pandemic. In urgent cases, such as the illness of the presiding judge or a business trip, judges try to schedule the next hearing at the earliest possible date, or the Head of the Division appoints a substitute judge (new judges in civil cases).
