In the program “Sekielski on Addiction,” guests of Marek Sekielski talk about the process of overcoming addiction and about long-term drinking or drug use woven into their life stories.
Marek Sekielski:
What determines whether someone becomes an alcoholic? Complexes, diminished self-worth, low self-esteem, a lack of courage to take on challenges...
Every alcoholic has their own pain threshold; everyone has their own rock bottom.
Starting treatment is like standing on the edge of a precipice; it is a step into the unknown.
Sobriety is a total change in life, the beginning of life anew.
During addiction, after a moment of euphoria, a psychological nightmare and a sense of failure appear.
My life was one great downfall, with no goals and no interests. I got up in the morning, went to work, came home in the evening and drank.
In the provinces, one can observe what drinking culture looks like.
Women who drink are stigmatized; it is different in the case of men who drink.
Every alcoholic reaches rock bottom in an individual way. There is no universal scale. One ends up on the street; another has to conclude that their life is hopeless while they have not yet lost everything.
In the case of alcoholics, the carrot does not work; the stick does.
At one of the meetings, a recovering alcoholic came up to me and said: Marek, go to therapy.
Therapy is the starting point for beginning treatment.
