The incident occurred on Wednesday night, August 12. Police officers from the Żagań unit noticed a passenger Opel with faulty lighting. The officers signaled the driver to stop. However, he ignored them and began to flee.

KPP Żagań:

A chase began, leading through the streets of Żagań and then through Trzebów, Rudawica, Osiecznica and Klików.

At one point, a driver of an Audi unexpectedly overtook the police car and cut off the officers. The driver sped along the middle of the road and obstructed the chase of the Opel. The officers:

The man talked on the phone the entire time, and his driving endangered other road users. After driving several kilometers toward Iłowa, bodywork components began falling off the Audi. The driver reduced his speed, and it seemed that the chase was coming to an end.

However, the driver had no intention of surrendering. At one point, he blocked the officers’ path, struck the police car’s wheel arch, and then drove into a forest. After traveling approximately three kilometers, he stopped and abandoned the car.

Other police officers also joined the operation, and an alarm was declared at the Żagań police headquarters. The officers quickly located and arrested the Audi driver, who had hidden in bushes. He was 22 years old and was banned from driving. Moreover, tests showed that he had been driving under the influence of drugs.

But this was not the end of the Żagań officers’ actions. The dangerous maneuvers of the 22-year-old Audi driver and his obstruction of the chase caused the Opel driver to get away. The officers made it their honor-bound objective to arrest the second fugitive as well.

And that is what happened. On Monday, August 17—thanks to the meticulous work, commitment and experience of criminal investigators—a 26-year-old man who had been driving the Opel that night was arrested. He, too, was banned from driving.

Both men were charged in connection with failing to stop for a traffic inspection and violating their driving bans. The 22-year-old, who will also be held responsible for forcing officers to abandon their official duties, was remanded in custody for three months.

Both suspects could face sentences ranging from three months to as much as five years in prison.
