Junior Inspector Seweryn Baranowski, deputy chief of the Złotoryja police, congratulated Radosław Kominiak from Pielgrzymka on his courage and thanked him for his exemplary conduct. “The man rushed without hesitation to help a 65-year-old drowning in the Złotoryja reservoir and thus saved his life,” reports Senior Sergeant Dominika Kwakszys, press officer of the District Police Headquarters in Złotoryja.

The spokeswoman adds: “Bearing this unusual situation in mind, the first deputy chief of the District Police Headquarters in Złotoryja invited the man who saved the 65-year-old to a meeting. He thanked him for his courageous and, above all, exemplary conduct. He congratulated him on keeping calm during a highly stressful situation and saving a human life, which, as we know, is the most precious value. He presented him with a letter of congratulations and symbolic gifts.

She adds: “Mr Radosław Kominiak is a hero in the eyes of many residents of Złotoryja County. However, when recalling what happened, he is very modest and admits that he does not feel like a hero. As he says: ‘I did what I thought was right, and I think anyone in my position would have acted similarly.’”

Let us recall that the incident took place at the Złotoryja Reservoir. (We reported on the matter in our newspaper on July 15.) “The dangerous situation occurred in a publicly accessible recreational area, on the eve of the start of the swimming season, when the designated water area was not supervised by lifeguards and residents entered the water at their own risk,” reported Junior Inspector Wojciech Jabłoński of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław.

The 65-year-old resident of Złotoryja, taking advantage of the sunny weather, was swimming outside the areas designated by the facility administrator. The spokesman:

After a short while, his calm movements became more vigorous, and city surveillance footage shows him striking the water aggressively with his hands.

Fortunately, the 65-year-old was noticed by a 44-year-old man who was walking along the promenade. The latter thought he had spotted a bag lying in the water. However, when he came closer, he realized that a human body was floating on the surface of the water.

Junior Inspector W. Jabłoński: “He rushed to help without hesitation. He ran into the water and pulled out the man, who was already unconscious. He began rescue efforts, thanks to which the man’s vital functions returned, and informed the police and ambulance service about the entire situation.

The officers:

Bearing the above situation in mind, and given that the summer holidays are in full swing, we appeal to all residents to pay attention to the behavior of people around them, especially while relaxing by the water.

They add:

At any moment, it may turn out that someone needs help. Let us not remain indifferent! Let us react! If we do not know how to behave in a particular situation, inform the emergency services by calling 112, and until they arrive, ask other people for help—perhaps they will know what to do.
